How is capital gains tax calculated on NEPSE share sales — short vs long term?

Short answer: For individuals, 7.5% on gains for holdings under one year; 5% for holdings of one year or more. Brokers withhold at source on the settlement.

Mechanics.

  • The withholding is on gains, computed against the weighted-average cost.
  • Mero Share statement is your reference for the cost basis.
  • Bonus shares and right issues affect your cost basis — record them when issued, not at the sale.

The exception most miss. Multiple parcels of the same stock bought at different prices average across — not FIFO. Keep an external cost-basis log if you trade actively; broker statements vary in clarity.
