Maternity leave + breastfeeding rights at private companies in Nepal — what’s enforceable?

Short answer: 14 weeks of paid maternity leave under the Labour Act 2074, paid by the employer; nursing breaks during work; protection against dismissal during pregnancy. Enforcement varies.

The legal floor.

  • 14 weeks paid maternity leave; up to 60 days paternity in defined cases.
  • Two daily nursing breaks for one year after return.
  • No dismissal solely on grounds of pregnancy.

Law vs practice. Many private workplaces apply the policy unevenly — partial pay, informal pressure, role-change after return. Have the HR letter in writing before you go on leave.
