Short answer: Pick one paid skill, build three portfolio pieces that look like client work, then send 10 to 15 short proposals a day for six weeks.
The shape of the first 90 days.
- Week 1 to 2 — profile: Title, 300-word overview, two skills tags, a portrait photo (not a logo), and three portfolio pieces. Set hourly rate at USD 8 to 15 to start, raise after the first five-star review.
- Week 3 to 6 — proposals: Apply only to jobs posted within 12 hours, with verified payment and three or fewer bids. Open the proposal with a sentence about their problem, not your CV.
- Week 7 to 12 — repeat clients: Convert the first happy client into a small retainer. One retainer beats five cold proposals.
The bit nobody warns you about. Upwork’s algorithm now down-ranks profiles that send long proposals to senior jobs in their first month. Stay in your tier — under USD 250 jobs — until you have two reviews.
