Cheapest way for family abroad to send remittance — Wise, IME, Western Union, Remitly?

Short answer: Wise is usually cheapest for digital-savvy senders; IME is the best balance of cost and last-mile coverage for rural recipients; Remitly is competitive in promotional windows.

A simple grid (typical USD 1,000 send to NPR).

Provider Total cost (fee + FX margin) Speed Best when
Wise ~0.6 to 1.0% Same day to 1 day Sender comfortable with app
IME ~0.8 to 1.5% Minutes Recipient prefers cash pickup or rural branch
Remitly Express ~0.7 to 1.2% Minutes First-send promotions in effect
Western Union (digital) ~1.0 to 2.0% Minutes Last-mile reach where others lack

The exception most miss. Headline fees can mask the FX margin. Compare on the received NPR figure, not the advertised cost.

Which rail is your family on, and why did they pick it?
