How do I help a family member with depression who refuses to see a doctor?

Short answer: Start with their experience, not your concern. Name what you have noticed without diagnosing. Offer to make the first call together — not on their behalf.

A frame that often works.

  • “I have noticed you have not been sleeping. I am not asking for a label — I just want to ask how you are.”
  • Listen. Resist the urge to fix in the first conversation.
  • Offer a small first step: “Would you come with me to a check-up on a Sunday?”

What hurts most families. Treating refusal as defiance. Refusal is often shame plus exhaustion. The slower path holds longer.

Law vs practice. Involuntary admission is a last-resort tool with high cost to the relationship. Use the slower path first, for months if needed.

What was the line that broke through for your family? Share — gently.
